Trucker Hat vs Snapback: Which Golf Cap Should You Buy?
"Trucker hat" and "snapback" get used almost interchangeably, but they're not the same thing — and the difference actually matters if you're choosing a cap for golf specifically.
The core difference
A snapback refers to the closure — a flat, adjustable plastic strap at the back with visible snaps, usually paired with a flatter brim and a more structured, all-fabric crown.
A trucker hat refers to the construction — a foam or structured front panel paired with a breathable mesh back panel, traditionally with a snapback-style closure (though not always). The mesh back is the whole point: it's built for airflow, which is exactly why trucker hats crossed over from workwear into golf and streetwear in the first place.
In other words: most trucker hats use a snapback closure, but not every snapback is a trucker hat. The mesh back is what you're actually choosing between.
Why it matters for golf specifically
Golf means hours outdoors, often in direct heat, with a cap on the whole time. A trucker hat's mesh back panel genuinely improves airflow compared to a fully structured, all-cotton snapback — it's a small thing that makes a noticeable difference by the back nine on a warm day.
Our embroidered golf trucker hats use a six-panel shape with a breathable mesh back specifically for this reason, available in ten colourways from a classic black or white through to bolder options like yellow and purple. When a full snapback still makes sense
If you're not chasing breathability — wearing the cap mostly off-course, or in cooler weather — an all-fabric snapback can look slightly cleaner and more uniform, since there's no visible mesh panel or seam line at the back. It comes down to whether you'll actually be sweating in it.
How to choose
- Playing golf regularly, especially in warmer months → trucker hat, for the airflow
- Wearing it mostly as a everyday accessory, rarely in the heat → either works; pick based on colour and shape
- Want one cap that covers both → a trucker hat is the safer all-rounder, since it performs on the course and still reads as a normal cap off it
