Golf Polo vs Performance Polo: What's the Difference?

Walk into any pro shop and you'll see two kinds of polo hanging side by side, often at similar prices, with no obvious explanation of why one costs more than the other. The difference comes down to fabric, construction, and what you actually plan to do in it.

What makes a polo a "golf polo" in the first place

A golf polo needs three things a standard cotton polo doesn't prioritise: a fabric that breathes, a fit that doesn't restrict a swing, and a finish that survives being crushed into a bag between rounds. Our embroidered Fairway Polo range uses a pique knit — the slightly textured weave you'll recognise from many golf shirts. Pique holds its shape, wrinkles less than flat cotton, and creates small air pockets that help with breathability.

Where "performance" comes in

"Performance polo" usually refers to the fabric blend, not the cut. Performance fabrics are engineered to wick moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates faster, dries quicker — which matters on a warm day when a cotton polo would otherwise sit damp against your back by the 9th hole. Some performance blends also include stretch fibres so the shirt moves with your swing instead of pulling across the shoulders.

Our Fairway Polos use moisture-wicking recycled polyester pique — a classic textured look with practical performance for a round.

Which one should you actually buy?

  • Playing 18 holes in summer, or sweating through your current shirts by the back nine — go performance. The moisture management genuinely changes how a round feels.
  • Wearing it mostly for the look, or layering it under a vest or jumper — a classic pique cotton polo is fine, and often drapes better.
  • Want one shirt that covers both — this is exactly the gap a moisture-wicking pique polo like the Fairway Polo is built for: the look of a classic polo with the practicality of performance fabric.

Fit and pairing

A golf polo should sit close through the shoulders without pulling when you rotate through a swing, and finish at or just below the belt line. Pair it with a neutral golf trucker hat for the course, or wear it untucked with jeans for an easy off-course look.
