Golf Course Dress Codes in Australia: What You Can Actually Wear | Sharp by Design
Share
Golf dress codes vary from club to club, and it's always worth checking your specific course before you turn up — but most Australian clubs follow a fairly similar set of general expectations. Here's what that usually looks like, and how to dress within it without ending up in something forgettable.
The general rules most clubs follow
- Collared shirts, generally required. A polo is the standard, and it's rarely optional at member clubs. Our Fairway Polo covers this without looking like every other polo on the course.
- No denim. Almost universal across Australian clubs, on the course specifically — tailored shorts, chinos, or golf-specific trousers are the standard instead.
- Tailored or golf-specific shorts and trousers, generally knee-length or longer for shorts, rather than casual or athletic shorts.
- Caps are usually fine, and often expected — a structured or trucker-style cap like ours from the Golf Trucker Hats & Embroidered Caps collection is a safe, standard choice. Etiquette-wise, brims generally face forward and caps come off indoors in the clubhouse.
- Proper golf shoes, spiked or spikeless depending on the course — check ahead, as some clubs restrict metal spikes.
Where the dress code loosens
Public courses and driving ranges are typically far more relaxed than private member clubs — a graphic tee and casual shorts are often perfectly fine at a public range, even where they wouldn't clear a members' clubhouse. If you're playing casually rather than at a formal club, this is where you have the most room to bring in streetwear pieces like a bold graphic tee instead of a strict polo-and-tailored-shorts combination.
Building an outfit that clears the rules without being boring
Dress code compliance doesn't have to mean plain. A well-fitted polo in a strong colour, paired with a considered cap, clears every standard requirement while still looking like an outfit you chose on purpose rather than the bare minimum. This is really the gap our Fairway Polo range is built for — pieces that satisfy a traditional dress code without defaulting to the safest, most forgettable option in the pro shop.
Always check before you go
Every club sets its own specific rules, and some are stricter than others — always worth a quick check of your course's dress code page or a call ahead, especially for a first visit or a guest round. This guide covers the general shape of what to expect, not a guarantee for every club.
