Fairway Polo Fit Guide: Flat Width vs Chest Size Explained | Sharp by Design

Choosing a golf polo online shouldn’t feel like a gamble. Order too small and you can’t swing freely. Order too large and the shoulders droop. Most of the confusion comes down to one thing: the numbers on a size chart aren’t always measuring what you think they are.

This Fairway Polo fit guide covers how the polo is designed to fit, what our garment measurements actually mean, and how to use them to pick your size first time. If you’d rather jump straight to the shirts, shop the Fairway Polo collection.

How the Fairway Polo is designed to fit

The Fairway Polo is an Australian-designed, relaxed-fit golf polo. The cut leaves room through the chest and body so you can rotate through your swing without the fabric pulling, and it works just as well in the clubhouse as on the course.

Because the fit is relaxed rather than slim, your usual polo size is a good place to start. Sizing down gives a closer look, but you’ll give up some of the ease the shirt is built around.

Flat width vs chest circumference: what’s the difference?

This is the part that trips most people up, so it’s worth getting straight.

Flat width is the measurement taken straight across the chest with the polo laid flat on a table, from one side seam to the other, just below the armpits. It only covers the front of the shirt.

Chest circumference is the distance all the way around, front and back. The relationship is simple:

Flat width × 2 = garment chest circumference

Here’s a real example from our chart. A size M has a flat width of 54.2 cm, so its full chest circumference is 108.4 cm.

The mix-up happens when people compare their own chest measurement (a full circumference) with a garment’s flat width (half a circumference). If you measured your chest at 100 cm and compared it with that 54.2 cm figure, the polo would look far too small. It isn’t. You’re comparing half a number with a whole one.

Fairway Polo garment measurements (S to 4XL)

These are measurements of the polo itself, taken flat, not body measurements. The chest circumference column is the flat width doubled.

Size Flat width Chest circumference (flat × 2) Body length Sleeve length
S 51.2 cm (20.2") 102.4 cm (40.3") 73.0 cm (28.7") 23.7 cm (9.3")
M 54.2 cm (21.3") 108.4 cm (42.7") 74.9 cm (29.5") 24.6 cm (9.7")
L 59.7 cm (23.5") 119.4 cm (47.0") 77.0 cm (30.3") 25.4 cm (10.0")
XL 62.5 cm (24.6") 125.0 cm (49.2") 79.0 cm (31.1") 26.1 cm (10.3")
2XL 67.3 cm (26.5") 134.6 cm (53.0") 81.3 cm (32.0") 26.9 cm (10.6")
3XL 72.4 cm (28.5") 144.8 cm (57.0") 83.8 cm (33.0") 27.9 cm (11.0")
4XL 79.2 cm (31.2") 158.4 cm (62.4") 86.4 cm (34.0") 28.5 cm (11.2")

Supplier measurements may vary by up to 2 inches (5 cm). For the full chart, see our Golf Sizing Guide.

How to find your size in four steps

1. Measure your chest. Wrap a soft tape measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms and across your shoulder blades. Keep it level and snug, not tight. This is your body chest circumference.

2. Compare like with like. Use the chest circumference column in the table above, not the flat width column. Circumference to circumference, or flat to flat.

3. Allow for ease. Ease is the extra room between your body and the shirt. For a relaxed fit, the polo should be roughly 10 to 16 cm larger around the chest than your body. A fitted look sits closer to your body measurement.

4. Check the length. If you’re tall, or you like a polo that sits clearly below the belt line, check body length too. The size jumps add roughly 2 cm of length at a time, so a taller wearer may prefer to size up for length.

A quick shortcut: take a polo you already own that fits well, lay it flat, measure straight across the chest, and match that number to our flat width column. It’s the most reliable method because it skips the body-to-garment conversion entirely.

Which size suits my chest?

Using the 10 to 16 cm of ease above, here’s a guide to the body chest measurement each size suits. Treat it as a starting point and adjust to how loose or fitted you like your polos.

Size Suits a body chest of roughly
S 86 to 92 cm
M 92 to 98 cm
L 103 to 109 cm
XL 109 to 115 cm
2XL 119 to 125 cm
3XL 129 to 135 cm
4XL 142 to 148 cm

Between sizes?

Our sizes don’t step up evenly, which is worth knowing. From M to L the chest grows by about 11 cm, but from L to XL it grows by only about 5.6 cm. If your chest sits around 98 to 103 cm, you’re between M and L:

  • Choose L for a roomy, relaxed fit with plenty of freedom in the swing.
  • Choose M for a closer, sharper look with less ease.
  • Broad shoulders or a larger chest? Size by your chest circumference and don’t worry if the length runs a little long.
  • Layering? Go with your regular size so there’s room over a base layer.
  • Buying a gift? Ask the person to measure a polo they already own, laid flat, and match it to the flat width column.

Choose your Fairway Polo

The Fairway Polo comes in several colourways, all built to the same relaxed fit, so the size you choose in one will carry across to the others:

Fairway Polo sizing: quick answers

Is the Fairway Polo a relaxed fit?
Yes. It’s designed with room through the chest and body for comfort and movement. Start with your usual size.

What is the flat width of a size M Fairway Polo?
54.2 cm (21.3 inches), which makes the full chest circumference 108.4 cm (42.7 inches).

How do I convert flat width to chest size?
Multiply the flat width by two. That gives the full distance around the garment’s chest.

Which size should I pick if I’m between M and L?
Pick L for a roomier relaxed fit, or M for a closer look.

Quick recap

  • Flat width is the measurement across the front of the shirt, laid flat.
  • Chest circumference is the full distance around, and it equals flat width × 2.
  • Always compare circumference to circumference, or flat to flat.
  • The Fairway Polo is a relaxed fit, so your usual size is a good starting point.
  • Still unsure? Measure your best-fitting polo flat and match it to the chart, or check the Golf Sizing Guide.
